The Article

In a world which is getting more complex each day we tend to seek simplicity and order. This also includes graphic design and advertising. How do we perceive visual information and how does our brain tend to organise visual data into a meaningful, cohesively and usable unified whole? It is a result of complex interactions between prior knowledge, goals and expectations. Max Wertheimer, one of the founders of the Gestalt psychology, concluded that the mental life consists of structured holes instead of the sensations. This then became the key idea behind the theory of gestalt psychology which he and his colleagues developed.

This psychology refers to different principles and theories of visual perception. They are based on how people perceive visually and how we tend to organise visual elements into groups or unified wholes.

Gestalt psychology gives designers new insights and ways on how to approach problems and challenges. It gives the designer the opportunity to tailor their message and work according to the function of the human eye and brain. When we are able to understand how we perceive things visually based on gestalt psychology we will be able to communicate better throughout design.
